Drilling and excavation has begun at our Toyota of Downtown Los Angeles site. With the demolition of a previously existing sales lot and office space completed, and the welding of 154 soldier beams now finished, excavation has commenced on what will be Toyota’s below-grade service department.
Located on the corner of Figueroa and Washington in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, this 290 thousand square-foot facility will feature a two-story showroom, a service department with the ability to accommodate forty vehicles, and a retail parts boutique.
ConAm has teamed with Ware Malcomb, PDS, Trammell Crow and The Shammas Group to create a more than just another car lot. The new facility is expected to set a new standard for urban dealerships by maximizing efficiency and allowing for a hospitality-oriented showroom. By eliminating the typical sales lot, customers will be greeted by Toyota personnel, creating an interactive experience between the team member and the customer. This new hospitality-oriented approach will maximize efficiency and enhance the customer’s experience.
This design will allow for lot-line-to-lot-line construction, bringing the showroom to the sidewalk and allowing for a pedestrian-friendly front door. With this design, however, have come many challenges in the construction process. “Because of the nature of this project, we do not have any available space for staging or offices. We have had to work with neighboring property owners and the City of Los Angeles to deal with these constraints; parking, sidewalk closures, and eventually traffic interruptions,” Says ConAm superintendent, James Lee. “In order to tackle these challenges, we have had to be creative and forward-thinking”.
While the unique concept of this facility seems to be the main focus, ConAm’s president, Nicholas Wojtaszek has other reasons for favoring the project. “This project is not only special in the nature of its design; it is special because it will also impact a population outside of Los Angeles”. ConAm Building Co.’s charity arm, “One Project – One Village”, ties their projects to charitable causes. Since the conception of “One Project – One Village”, ConAm has proudly been linked to charity: water, a non-profit organization focused on providing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. “As a team, we are passionate about making the biggest difference possible. And as builders, we wanted to be a part of building something that embodies that difference. Charity: water and their mission perfectly embody our passion, and their cause is something that is now close to our hearts. We believe that life is our project and Earth is our village. We are proud that through ‘One Project – One Village’, our projects are able to save lives”.
ConAm has committed to donating $50,000 of their construction fee to charity: water, which will be used to build wells in developing nations. These wells will not only provide clean, safe drinking water for those in need, but they will also provide hope and save lives.
